Switching to Mac from Windows

Hi. My laptop’s screen broke since last year. Its screen glitches and flickers whenever I open something that has a black background. Annoying as fuck. It’s heavy too, therefore I can’t bring it anywhere. 2,9 KG BRUH.

I thought about it.. and so I googled a laptop that would suit my needs. All of the ultrabooks seem good enough, but I want something different. After lots of googling and reading reviews on the internet, I still don’t know which one I’m going to buy. Not so long after that, I saw that Macbook Pro just came out (it was 2017). There were two version of Macbook Pro 2017, the one with function keys and another one with Touch Bar. It was easy, of course I chose the one with function keys. But it was only available with 256gb storage. Oh no. I’m currently using a 500gb SSD and sometimes I felt like it’s not really enough. Then something bad happened and I cancelled my plan.

Fast forward to 5th semester. Initially, I was like, “Eh, okay, I’ll just keep using my big heavy laptop. I don’t need to bring my laptop anyway.” Turned out I really needed it. My family don’t use laptop really much, except me. My sister has the 2010 15-inch Macbook Pro that I occasionally bring to campus. It is heavy, but not as heavy as mine. One more problem… It has that video card issues that causes kernel panic. Even though it’s problematic, at least it saved me, once. I did my assignments wrong, but I still have time to correct and get it printed. The Macbook Pro boots up… then, bam. It just restarted itself. Thank God I always keep my college assignments on Dropbox. It still saved me anyway.

I told my mom about my plan to buy a new laptop but it wasn’t until yesterday we bought it. I was torn between 2018 and 2017, because the 2018 one has quad core processor. I plan to use this for another minimum 5 years, so why not wait a little longer so I can buy the better one? I tried justifying the 256gb storage, but no… I don’t want my laptop storage to feel like a tight underwear. It wouldn’t be convenient to transfer my files back and forth just because I don’t have free storage.

I was an avid Windows user. I only used Mac for about two months in 2015/2016 (don’t remember lol). When I used my sister’s Mac, I was mesmerized by its smoothness. Even though my sister doesn’t swap her HDD to SSD like lots of older Mac user, from what I experienced, it still counted as smooth. I also saw my friend’s Mac and its display amazed me. The color just JUMPED OUT and looks so good.

So it goes, (Taylor Swift reference, ha.) I bought a Mac. I went from 15.6-inch laptop to 13.3-inch. My mom, when she saw this laptop, she said, “Are you sure this is the laptop that you want? Isn’t it a bit small?” then I replied, “Well, this is what it takes to make a lightweight laptop.” I never thought that going from 15.6 inch to 13.3 would be this easy. Believe it or not, I didn’t even realize that much screen size difference. Could the screen resolution be the factor? From 1080p to Retina Display.

Then, the keyboard. Macbook Pro from 2016 was plagued by the keyboard issue. People reportedly said that their keyboard feel sticky, sometimes unresponsive, sometimes double inputting whatever they pressed. Well, my friend’s right shift button did stick. That was also the factor that made me buy the 2018 instead of 2017 one, other than the processor. But, people also said that the membrane silicone on 2018 didn’t fix the problem. I’ve only been using this for about a month, so I can’t say much about the issue and hopefully won’t have to deal with it. I came from Accutype keyboard by Lenovo that has the perfect tactile feedback and clicky typing for my taste. Now I’m moving to Butterfly keyboard that has soooo little travel key and loud. Oh boy, I do like loud typing key very much. This is serious. I don’t like silent keyboard, it just doesn’t feel right. I transitioned very easily, maybe a little bit typo here and there, but overall it’s been a good experience typing on this keyboard as I write this. I didn’t feel cramped like others said about typing on this keyboard. I also told my mom that I didn’t press my keyboard THAT hard, because it is loud.

Anyway, the major reason why I chose Macbook instead of Dell XPS 13 is the trackpad. Did I tell you that while using my sister’s Macbook, I was able to edit photos and videos without mouse? Imagine THE PAIN if you’re using a Windows laptop. Dell XPS 13, that laptop is light as hell, packing 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD in just 1,2 kg, also, i7 processor, but the trackpad… It’s so small compared to the new Macbook. Fyi, the Macbook Pro’s trackpad is approximately 13 x 8 cm. That is the biggest trackpad available on an ultrabook.

All of the good reason why I’m switching to Mac doesn’t mean that this operation system is flawless. I don’t know what’s happening, but, Windows App Store is growing faster, yet the App Store is just… App Store? It doesn’t even have Instagram of Twitter official account. Not even Netflix. This is one (or two?) thing that irks me.

But, now… I’m a Mac user. I know this post won’t help anyone in any way, I’m just in the mood for sharing. Please choose your laptop wisely. I’m available to contact if you just want to consult which laptop is suitable for you, budget and spec-wise.
