Laser vs Inkjet Printer, Which One?
A printer is a device needed by (almost) everyone. College student, corporate officer, even the small home business, they need printer. Some people prefer to print at printing center, but I'm not one of them. If necessary, yes, but I'd rather own a printer. Cost-wise, it's cheaper and saves you some time.
"But, which printer should I buy?"
Ok, let me explain it to you. There are two types of printer, laser and inkjet. The latter is more famous in general user due to its cheap price and portability. The former is usually found at big printing center.
What distinguishes them beside their price is how they print the document and the type of ink. Basically, laser printer uses static electricity to transfer a dry ink, called toner, to a piece of paper. Then, the dry ink is hot-rolled and fused into the paper. That’s why a paper fresh out of a laser printer felt hot. The dry ink, toner, usually costs more than usual ink used by inkjet printer. But, since it’s a dry substance that then heated up by the roller, it creates waterproof print.
On the other hand, how inkjet printer works is by spraying little drops of ink onto the paper. The price of genuine printer ink is usually cheaper than toner. But, not many people I know use genuine ink, to be honest. After the starter ink ran out, they will switch the ink system to infused ink. Sadly, this mechanism sometimes will produce wet and flabby paper. Be careful while touching it, especially those who have sharp nails. If you ever touch the paper fresh out of both printer, you will notice the difference of the texture they produced.
But, due to this simple mechanism, the dimension of inkjet printer is smaller and weighs significantly lighter. For comparison, my Xerox CP115W weighs 10.9kgs, but my old printer Canon IP1200 only weighs under 3kgs. Ok, I didn’t expect it to be that significant..

The advantage and disadvantage of both types of printer can be summed up like this:
Laser printer: Printing time per sheets is under 30 seconds with expensive starting cost. Produces waterproof document. The ink will not dry out. Willing to sacrifice portability.
Inkjet printer: Printing time is way slower. Able to print on various types of paper. Better blended color. If not being used for a prolonged time, the ink will dry out. Options for cheaper ink.
In conclusion, if you print lots of documents, not images, regularly and every second counts, you’re willing to splurge some cash upfront, buy a laser printer. But, if you want to print on various paper, are okay with slow printing, cheap price, and willing to hear the noise while it’s in use, by all means, buy an inkjet printer.
Personally, I’ve been using laser printer, Xerox CP115W, since three years ago. Why did I purchase this, knowing that I don’t print that often? To be honest, I can’t stand the noise of inkjet printer. It still serves me good with little noise. Also, the images produced by it always looks good. I have no complain for this printer.
Love you, printer. (There’s a rumour that if your printer knew you dislike them, or you’re panicking around them, it’ll stop working. :p)
